  Elongated Volvo S90
Volvo begins shipping China-built S90 sedans to U.S.
Automotive News China | 2017/4/14

Volvo Car Corp. says it has started shipping the first batch of 400 China-built S90 sedans to the U.S.

The long-wheelbase sedans were produced at Volvo's assembly plant in the northeastern China city of Daqing.

The sedans will arrive at Volvo's U.S. dealerships in June, the company said.

The stretched S90 has a wheelbase of 2,941 mm (115.8 inches), which is 120 mm (4.7 inches) longer than the regular S90. The car went on sale in China with a starting price of 369,800 yuan ($53,640).

The S90 will become the second Volvo model to be exported to the U.S. from China. In 2015, Volvo began exporting the long-wheelbase S60 Inscription to the United States from its plant in the southwestern China city of Chengdu.

The Swedish automaker said it also plans to ship the long-wheelbase S90 to Europe, but did not indicate when those shipments would begin.

The long-wheelbase S90 is the fifth Volvo model produced in China. The X60 crossover and the stretched versions of the S80 and S60 are built at Volvo's plant in Chengdu, while the XC Classic is produced in Daqing.

Volvo is building a third Chinese assembly plant. The new factory, in the city of Luqiao south of Shanghai, will produce Volvo's 40-series compact car.

China is the biggest market and an export hub for Volvo, which was acquired by private Chinese carmaker Zhejiang Geely Holding Group from Ford Motor Co. in 2010.

In the first quarter of this year, Volvo's China sales jumped nearly 19 percent to 23,335 vehicles.
